It is characterized by skin erythema or plaques with varying degrees of itching and scaling, resulting from a response to Malassezia species. The affected areas are those with abundant sebaceous glands, such as at the scalp, face, chest, back, armpits, and groin, where bacteria will break down the skin oil to induce an inflammatory response. Dandruff is a relatively mild form of seborrheic dermatitis that is characterized by mild scaling of the scalp without inflammation.
